Video: Check out the new state-of-the-art medical learning centre at Health Sciences North

If a medical student ever wondered whether she or he would be able to perform their duties at the first sight of blood, they might want to check out one of the simulation labs at the Labelle Innovation and Learning Centre at Health Sciences North (HSN).

The official opening of the new $27-million facility was just last week, but already medical learners are booked in day and night to look after a variety of sick and injured patients in a way that doctors and nurses from back in the day could only dream about.

Their patients are not real. In the "sim labs" the patients are life-like robotic figures of men, women and children that can moan, scream, cry out in pain and display a host of other symptoms such as shortness of breath and loss of blood pressure. They will even come back to life again if they're given CPR at the right moment.

City streamlines process for installing traffic-calming infrastructure

The public support requirement for the city’s installation of traffic-calming infrastructure such as speed bumps has been done away with, but the requirement to consult with the public stands.

This much was decided during Tuesday’s city council meeting, which found the city’s elected officials support Ward 9 Coun. Deb McIntosh’s push to streamline the approvals process.

During the meeting, she was supported by Ward 1 Coun. Mark Signoretti, who used Robinson Drive as an example of where the streamlined approvals process might have been of benefit.

“Robinson was on the traffic calming list when the road was being redesigned,” he said, adding that the city failed to achieve the public support requirement of the day so it was dropped from the list.

“Now the residents would like traffic-calming in that area, and we all know that residents will move, different families will move into neighbourhoods, areas will change with demographics of seniors, of young families – it’s just the evolution of life. So now this road has to be put to the bottom of the list or re-evaluated.”

Last year was deadly on Ontario’s roads, but North fares slightly better

It seems some drivers still aren’t getting the message that distracted driving and speeding are deadly habits, said provincial police.

The Ontario Provincial Police has reported significant increases in speed-related and distracted-driving-related deaths on provincial highways.

In 2021, 58 people lost their lives in distracted driving crashes, a 29-per-cent increase from the previous year when 45 people were killed, said Sgt. Carlo Berardi.

In the northeast region, the OPP said eight people were killed in distracted-driving crashes, up from seven the year prior, said Berardi.

Lifestory: Independent and self-possessed, Roma Griffin was a credit to L’Arche Sudbury

Roma Griffin knew exactly who she was.

She was a woman of Sudbury, a daughter of Gatchell, independent, self-possessed, and holding within her a capacity to understand human emotion that made those who knew her marvel.

At first glance, some may have reduced her based on her disability, deciding that her Down's syndrome meant that she was not a complex person, full of hopes and dreams.

But you couldn’t think that once you met her, her brother Ron Griffin told Sudbury.com.
