Good morning, Greater Sudbury! Here are a few stories to start your day on this Tuesday morning.

Results from the 2022 municipal election

Greater Sudbury is waking up to a new city council today after last night’s provincial election. While results are unofficial at this time, Sudbury.com can report that Paul Lefebvre has been elected as Greater Sudbury’s next mayor. In the ward races, there was an upset in Ward 5 with sitting councillor Robert Kirwan being roundly defeated by challenger Mike Parent. The races in several wards were close as ballots were being counted. Sailing to victory in the ward races was Natalie Labbée in Ward 7, Deb McIntosh in Ward 9, Fern Cormier in Ward 10 and Bill Leduc in Ward 11. Wards 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 8 and 12 were still close by late evening. More complete results will be available today on Sudbury.com.

Copper Cliff Italian Club to fold, building up for sale

The Copper Cliff Italian Club’s doors have been shuttered since this spring, and now the club’s leadership has decided its closure will be permanent. Club president Randy Desanti told Sudbury.com this week the decision to fold the club is due in part to the impacts of COVID-19 on the organization. But he said the Italian club’s membership is also getting very old and spending less and less time there, and the younger generation just isn’t showing the same interest. The club’s building is now listed for sale for $674,900. The ad says the hall has a full banquet hall, a fully equipped commercial kitchen, walk-in freezer, party room/lounge space with a kitchenette on the upper level, as well as a separate bar and event space, as well as a four-lane bowling alley on the lower level.

FedNor announces $600K for two local small businesses

Two local small businesses received grants totalling $600,000 through FedNor last week. The federal grants will be divided between Feather Company Ltd. ($500,000) and Dr. Clean Inc. ($100,000). The Feather Company Ltd. grant is “to support late-stage development for its patented HIYA device, a Pressurized Metered Dose Inhaler platform for medicinal and adult-use markets in Canada, Europe and the United States.” The Dr. Clean Inc. grant is “to expand its operations and purchase new equipment to help them capitalize on the immediate and increasing demand for commercial and industrial cleaning services.” “Small businesses are a cornerstone of regional economies and that is certainly the case for Northern Ontario,” Lapointe said in a media release. “That is why it is important to invest in entrepreneurs and give them the resources they need to succeed. With this FedNor funding, Dr. Clean and Feather Company will be able to innovate and expand their businesses right here in Sudbury.”

Wolves fall 5-3 to visiting 67s

The Sudbury Wolves jumped out to an early lead against visiting Ottawa on Sunday, but weren’t able to sustain it over three periods, and ended up falling to the 67s by a score of 5-3. The two teams were fairly evenly matched, with Ottawa taking 31 shots on goal to Sudbury’s 27. Neither team was able to capitalize on the power play; Sudbury went zero for two while Ottawa went zero for five. With the win, Ottawa’s record improves to 9-0, which puts them first in the OHL’s East Division, first in the Eastern Conference and first overall. Sudbury, which saw its record drop to 3-5-1, is last in the Central Division, ninth in the Eastern Conference, and 17th overall. The Wolves are on the road this weekend, playing in Sarnia on Friday and in London on Saturday. They’re back in action at home for the first of a four-night home stand on Nov. 2 against the Soo Greyhounds.

Oct. 24 marked Diwali, the Indian festival of lights

The ancient festival of lights known as Diwali (also known as Divali) is running Oct. 22 to Oct 26, with the most special of the celebration being today, Oct. 24. Diwali is often referred to as the “Festival of Lights”, as people light the inside and outside of their homes with rows of lamps. The word Diwali itself is derived from the Sanskrit word, “Deepavali”, which means, “rows of lighted lamps”. Many consider it the equivalent of western celebrations of Christmas, especially with lights decorating the homes and churches. The exact date for Diwali is determined by the Hindu lunisolar calendar, which looks at the movement of both the moon and the sun from the Earth. The festival takes place in the middle of Karkita, the 8th month in the Hindu calendar. Some versions of the calendar also put Karkita as the 7th month. The week is celebrated by Hindus, Jains and Buddhists as a symbol of victory over darkness with an emphasis on different traditions and legends throughout all regions of India.

Let’s eat! It’s no labour to enjoy Herc’s Eatery

When you walk into Herc’s, you experience all things Greek, from the music to the cozy dining room to the fine wines and beer imported from Greece. After 24 years in business, three major renovations have ensured Herc’s friendly, comforting atmosphere remains. It all began with George Tyrkos, a cousin of current owner Gus Bountouris. Since then, there have been a lot of family and friends working at Herc’s. “When I came to Sudbury 25 years ago, I was one of the only new Greek immigrants,” Bountouris said. “Since then, we have helped about 40 Greek residents and relatives come to Sudbury and almost everyone got their start at the restaurant.” Bountouris is a full-time structural engineer who takes on contracts across Ontario, so his wife, Anastasia, and both children work at the restaurant.
