Good morning, Greater Sudbury! Here are a few stories to start your day on this Saturday morning.

Adanac Ski Hill opens for the season on Sunday

Adanac Ski Hill will open for the season Sunday, Dec. 18, starting at 9 a.m. Two of seven runs will be open. Hours of operation, fees and up-to-date hill conditions are available at www.greatersudbury.ca/play/ski-hills. Regular operating hours resume on Jan. 2, 2023. Operating hours are dependent on weather conditions and may change without notice. Lively Ski Hill remains closed. It will open when there is a sufficient amount of natural and man-made snow on the ski runs and lift areas. Consistent daily temperatures of -15 C and below are needed for the snow-making system to be effective.

Don’t miss the Winter Wonderland carnival in Azilda

If you’ve been longing to walk in a winter wonderland, make plans to visit Azilda tonight and tomorrow for the opening of the community's winter carnival, part of Café Heritage’s Le Festival de Noël. This Winter Wonderland carnival will continue each night from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., running until Dec. 27 at Whitewater Lake Parkl. The Nativity Scene will be the centrepiece of the displays at the park, which also features a miniature Santa’s Village built by the students at Collège Boréal and with plans by Bélanger Salach Architects, who designed the wonderland. On Saturday, Dec. 17, family friendly activities will be part of Rolly’s Games, Indignous and pioneer games in memory of Roland Dutrisac, a beloved community member and champion of the games. The games will begin at 10 a.m. with tea boiling, a race to build a fire and boil water, two-person crosscut sawing, and snow snaking, a game featuring the launch of a pole underhand into a snow tunnel, hoping for the furthest distance down the track.

Ontario's flu season may have peaked, children's hospitals should see relief: Moore

The flu season may have peaked in Ontario, and that should relieve some pressure on children's hospitals in the near future, the province's top doctor said Thursday. Chief medical officer of health Dr. Kieran Moore believes flu season hit its apex in recent days. The number of people testing positive for influenza decreased last week and test positivity has also gone down, he said. "That again, gives me some hope that we're at a flex moment where we may be on a decline and see decreased burden of illness in our communities from influenza," Moore told The Canadian Press. Respiratory illnesses have overwhelmed children's hospitals across the province over the past two months, with the flu accounting for the bulk of recent admissions at many of the country's pediatric hospitals.

Crash leads to impaired charge for driver

A single-vehicle crash on Manitoulin Island on Dec. 10 led to impaired charges for the driver. OPP said police were dispatched to the crash at approximately 9:20 p.m. Upon arrival, police said they located a single vehicle that had been involved in the crash. “Upon speaking with the driver, police observed signs of impairment and the driver was subsequently arrested,” OPP report. “The vehicle was towed and impounded.” Charged with operation while impaired and driving while suspended is a 44-year-old man from Whitefish River First Nation. The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Gore Bay on Jan. 18.

Paper Kings end Cubs’ nine-game win streak

The visiting Espanola Paper Kings put an end to the Greater Sudbury Cubs’ nine-game winning streak on Dec. 15 at the Gerry McCrory Countryside Sports Complex. The game ended 4-1 for Espanola. The win improves Espanola’s record to 15-11-2-2 while Greater Sudbury’s drops to 25-5-2-0 on the year. The Cubs still lead the Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League with 52 points, followed closely by the Timmins Rock with 51 points and the Hearst Lumberjacks with 50. The Cubs are back in action tonight on the road, taking on the French River Rapids at Noelville Arena.

Surge in pothole claims creates response backlog

With pothole claims against the city surging, there has been a backlog in municipal response. The City of Greater Sudbury has a service standard of responding to claims within four to six weeks, but city Corporate Services general manager Kevin Fowke said they’re taking longer. A reader let Sudbury.com know about the backlog, complaining about a five-month wait and counting to get a response to his claim. “We recognize we’re above that service standard,” Fowke told Sudbury.com, noting that although they’re working to resolve matt
