Popup overdose prevention site operates for a few hours Friday

For the second Friday in a row, a makeshift, volunteer-run overdose prevention site operated for a few hours in the downtown/Flour Mill area of Greater Sudbury. While Greater Sudbury Police, a city bylaw officer and a paramedic arrived at the scene just off Louis Street, the group was allowed to operate until the early evening. It's reflective of the approach officials are taking to the opioid crisis, which kills someone in the city every five days. Rather than arresting users, the focus is on preventing overdose deaths and other harm-prevention strategies. Read the full story here

Close call: Capreol family hope public can help ID man who side-swiped them

A Capreol family is in shock days after being victims of a hit and run on May 29. While no one was seriously injured in the crash, Andre Lafleche and his wife, Melissa Lavallee, along with two of their children, are still shaken up after a vehicle driving in the opposite direction crossed the centre line. Lafleche was driving, and he was able to veer to the side of the road, avoiding what could have been a catastrophic head-on collision, but not enough to avoid having the other vehicle essentially scrape its way down the driver's side of the couple's vehicle. Lavallee said the driver of the other vehicle just backed up quickly and took off. Read the full story here

Forests Ontario CEO: Easy flood response for Sudbury is to plant more trees

Rivers have surged over their banks this spring, flooding hundreds of homes, businesses and cottages. The Ottawa, Muskoka, French and Mattagami rivers (and many others) have flooded – and the risk now extends to lakes as well. “Forecast high winds […] will pose additional flood hazards along the shorelines of Lake Erie and Lake Ontario due to high water, wind driven storm surge and damages due to erosive wave action,” read a late May warning from the province’s flood forecasting system. While provincial funding cuts for flood work have been imposed on Ontario Conservation Authorities, 14 of them have issued flood warnings. Read the full story here
