Twelve fires burning in the Northeast, four in Sudbury
There are currently 12 forest fires burning in the Northeast region, four of which are in Sudbury according to the latest report by Aviation, Forest Fire and Emergency Services. The latest fire, Peterborough 1, was found was west of Mellon Lake Sunday evening and is out of control at a size of 10 hectares. The forest fire hazard ranges from low to extreme across the region, with the areas of most concern situated in the east. Read the full story here.
Drinking water advisory issued for residents of Gogama
Public Health Sudbury and Districts has issued a drinking water advisory effective immediately for the residents of Gogama. A drinking water advisory means that water from the municipal system should not be used for; drinking, making juice, infant formula or ice; cooking, washing uncooked fruits and vegetables, or brushing teeth. Residents are advised that boiling the water may not be enough to make it safe for consumption. Read the full story here.
Police going door to door in northern Manitoba hunt for B.C. homicide suspects
More personnel and equipment are being poured into the gruelling hunt for two B.C. homicide suspects in the bug infested and bog strewn landscape surrounding the tiny northern Manitoba community of Gillam. As the nearly week-long search for Bryer Schmegelsky, 18, and 19-year-old Kam McLeod continued Sunday the RCMP said there had been no new sightings of the pair and no new information to indicate they have left the area. The two Port Alberni, B.C., residents are wanted in connection with three homicides earlier this month in northern British Columbia. Read the full story here.
Palladino Auto Group Golf Classic raises $173K for NEO Kids
The Palladino Auto Group Golf Classic for NEO Kids, held July 25 at Idylwylde Golf and Country Club, raised $173,295 for children’s health care needs in Northeastern Ontario. Close to 150 golfers took part in the event. With a goal of matching the funds raised from last year’s tournament, which was $140,000, the Palladino Auto Group Golf Classic more than surpassed that goal by more than $30,000, and officially became a record-breaking year for the golf classic, said a press release. A celebration of culture: Bell Park hosts the first Japanese Festival Matsuri
Saturday afternoon, Bell Park hosted the first, of what is likely to become an annual Japanese Festival Matsuri celebration of art, religion and culture in Sudbury. This inaugural event was organized by local Takako Shoji Boyle, who originally from Tokyo, said she is one of 20 individuals living in Sudbury whose first language is Japanese. She said she was inspired to begin this annual tradition for the sake of her bi-cultural and bi-lingual family, as well as the community's growing interest in Japanese culture. Canadian Blood Services looking to fill 200 appointments by Aug. 5
With the August long-weekend around the corner, Canadian Blood Services is asking Sudbury residents to help fill over 200 appointments available from now until Aug. 5. While there tends to be a decrease in donation near holidays and long weekends, this is also when the demand for blood increases, said a press release by Canadian Blood Services. 'The little school that could': Nursery school needs new home after fire at Grace United Church
After Grace United Church was destroyed in a fire Wednesday night, it wasn't just the parish's congregation that was affected. For the past five years, the church has been home to the Minnow Lake/New Sudbury Co-operative Nursery School. About 40 toddlers and preschoolers take part in the program, which runs a few hours per day, three days a week during the school year — it's currently shut down for the summer. Canaqua hosts Canada's first Individual SwimRun National Championship
Canaqua Sports hosted Canada's first Individual SwimRun Championships Sunday morning at Kivi Park, making this the third SwimRun challenge in Sudbury since the organization was introduced by its president Ian Feldman in 2006. The seven-stage course included three swims and four runs, on four different trails, equaling a total distance of 17.3 km. Out of 22 participants, Sudbury's own Sara McIlraith and Mat Legault earned first and second place, allowing them to advance to the World Individual SwimRun Championships taking place in Grado, Italy on Sept. 8. Local Jenna Hellstrom reflects on her experience at the 2019 World Cup
Jenna Hellstrom has experienced a lot over the course of her very impressive soccer career, to date. Nothing would compare to World Cup - 2019. "Even though I didn't step on the field, I've never felt the way I felt after that loss," said the 24 year-old Sudbury native, referring to the 1-0 setback that Team Canada suffered against Sweden, eliminating Hellstrom and her mates from the prestigious tournament in France in the round of sixteen. The scope of Alex Fera's Olympic-style weightlifting contingent is expanding, and it's not just limited to the Greater Sudbury region. Among the masters athletes who have enjoyed success on a provincial level, anxious to make their mark at a Canadian Championship, are a pair of lifters who must travel some distance to catch up with the crew at Northern CrossFit on Lasalle Boulevard in Sudbury. Now 45 years old, North Bay native Dave Harding parlayed a twenty year love of mountain biking into a more diversified training regimen with CrossFit, finally looping back to a much more narrowly focused pursuit that is Olympic-style weightlifting.
