Good morning, Greater Sudbury.

Here are some stories to start your weekend.

Coroner investigating sudden death of teen girl near Ste. Anne-des-Pins church:

The sudden death of a 17-year-old girl on or near the grounds of a downtown church is under investigation, Greater Sudbury Police told Sudbury.com Tuesday. The teen's body was located in an area off of Beech Street near Ste. Anne-des-Pins church in downtown Sudbury. The area was taped off by police Tuesday morning. A blanket, tarp and sleeping pad were located inside of the grassy taped-off area next to a religious statue. While Sudbury.com was on scene at around 11:30 a.m., the person's body had already been removed, and there was a single Greater Sudbury Police squad car guarding the site. In an email, Greater Sudbury Police spokesperson Kaitlyn Dunn confirmed officers were there for a sudden death investigation, and the scene has since been released. She said the person who died was a 17-year-old girl. Police are working in collaboration with the coroner's office, and will provide support throughout the coroner's investigation, she said.

Time is now for a Green wave, says Bill Crumplin:

Sudbury Green Party candidate Bill Crumplin is hopeful that the third time is a charm as he opened his campaign office on Elm Street on Oct. 10. The Laurentian University professor is making his third foray into politics, completing the trifecta of running at the provincial, municipal and now federal level. Crumplin ran for the provincial Greens in Nickel Belt in 2018, before jumping right back into politics as a mayoral candidate in the 2018 Sudbury municipal election. A shorter election and a bigger team, coupled with two campaigns under his belt have Crumplin feeling more at ease as election day approaches. "In the municipal election there were 11 of us (running for mayor) and it made debating crazy, complicated and I don't think any of us were really able to get our message out there," said Crumplin. "It was a long campaign, one of the things I really appreciate about this one is it's relatively short. I also think that because this is my third foray into politics, I'm known to a certain extent now where provincially I wasn't, I think the mayoral campaign really helped with that." Crime of the week: Police seeking information on break and enter suspect:

Crime Stoppers and the Greater Sudbury Police Service are seeking the public’s assistance in identifying a suspect involved in a break and enter. On Sept. 18 at about 6 a.m., the male suspect smashed the glass door of a retail establishment on Notre Dame Avenue near Bond Street to gain access to the vestibule then forced open the second glass door. The culprit then proceeded to steal property from within the business. The man was wearing a dark-coloured hooded jacket, a white and red ball cap, a light colored turtleneck, black pants with a stripe along the side and gloves. He was wearing dark running shoes with white soles. Anyone with information regarding the suspect is asked to contact Greater Sudbury Police at 705-675-9171 or Crime Stoppers at 800-222-8477, or by leaving at tip at SudburyCrimeStoppers.com

A first look at the Five's new jerseys:

The Sudbury Five's season opener is still more than two months away, but the team gave its fans an early glimpse of what they'll be wearing when they hit the court for the 2019-20 NBL Canada season. A small contingent of fans, sponsors, coaches and players gathered at Overtime Sports Bar and Grill Tuesday morning to unveil the trio of jerseys that the Five will don this year. The Five's mantra for this season is "Level Up", an indicator that the team is looking to build on the success of their inaugural season that saw them make the playoffs and record the league's third-highest attendance numbers. In addition to unveiling their three jerseys, the team announced the first three players that have been signed to suit up for the Five this season - Sudbury's George Seresse, North Bay's Joey Puddister and rookie Brady Skeens. Check out the new jerseys here.

Missing: Sudbury police looking for Steven Garrett, 48:

Greater Sudbury Police are asking for the public's assistance to locate missing man Steven Garrett. The 48-year-old was last seen in downtown Sudbury in the late afternoon of Monday, Oct. 8. Garrett is described as 6-2, 325 pounds, with short brown hair, a medium-length brown beard and blue eyes. He normally wears either a jean jacket or black winter jacket with two blue strips on the front.

This Northern Ont.-designed drone flies into tight and dangerous spaces in mines:

A drone flies through a dark, treacherous mine tunnel. Blades whirring, the drone shines a light around the black rocks and relays what it sees across radio waves to its goggle-wearing pilot back in the safe zone. It sounds like something out of a sci fi movie, but it’s just another day on the job for Lucas Tignanelli at SafeSight Exploration in North Bay, where they specialize in drone technology for mine sites. While Tignanelli is officially SafeSight’s product developer, due to its startup nature, he and the rest of the team often fill in where needed. Sometimes he’s flying drones, other times he’s working one-on-one with clients. As he says: “There are lots of holes that need filling.” Not only is SafeSight a startup, it’s also a bit of a family business. More on this story here.

Miss Universe Canada pageant presents Sudbury senior with Lifetime Achievement Award:

Jeanne (who also goes by Joan) Hart of Sudbury has never been a beauty queen herself, but thanks to her work behind the scenes at pageants, she's done some pretty amazing things. As a chaperone, she's accompanied pageant winners on overseas trips and even had breakfast with Queen Elizabeth and Prince Phillip during the royal couple's 1984 visit to Sudbury. Starting in the early 1970s, she's pretty much been involved in every aspect of pageanting from the local to the national level, from organizing and judging to doing participants' hair and makeup. Hart, who to this day holds the position of regional co-ordinator and delegates manager for eastern Ontario and Quebec with Miss Universe Canada, was honoured by that pageant this past summer. On Aug. 17, during the final competition at the Miss Universe Canada pageant, she was presented with the Lifetime Achievement Award for 45 years of service to the pageant (and its predecessors).
