Federal Liberal leader Justin Trudeau will be making a campaign stop in Sudbury on Sept. 26. With the federal election less than four weeks away, Trudeau has been embroiled in controversy of late, stemming from photos from 2001 that show him in "brownface" at a Halloween party. Currently, Trudeau is trailing Conservative Party leader Andrew Scheer in polling. Trudeau is expected in the Nickel City early Thursday morning, though his itinerary has not been confirmed at this time. Sudbury.com will be livestreaming Trudeau's visit starting at around 9 a.m. today so be sure to tune in.

Ward 5 councillor's combative responses to critics earns council rebuke:

While pointing out that he only gave as good as he got, Ward 5 Coun. Bob Kirwan said Tuesday he regrets Facebook comments he made that put him in the cross hairs of the city’s integrity commissioner, Robert Swayze – and led councillors to approve a reprimand. “That’s not me,” Kirwan said, responding to a question from Ward 2 Coun. Michael Vagnini. “I’m sorry we have to go through this.” “When someone calls you basically an idiot” they should expect a response in kind, he said. “It’s my Irish blood. I don’t turn the other cheek.” The lengthy debate over Swayze’s report — in which he called for Kirwan be reprimanded — began angrily, but then switched to a discussion about how public figures should behave in the face of endless online attacks. Vagnini pointed out he had been attacked online during Tuesday’s meeting for his flamboyant fashion sense, but has learned to let those comments pass. “Are you sorry for what has transpired and the comments that were made?” he asked Kirwan. “Of course!” Kirwan replied. “I don’t want to go through all this stress.” Swayze said he investigated nine complaints about Kirwan, but dismissed all but two of them. Date for resolution or trial expected Oct. 16 for Callam Rodya:

Rodya, 32, is charged with possession of child pornography, accessing child pornography, making available child pornography and one count of possession of a Schedule 1 substance (cocaine). Rodya has been out on bail since February. He is a former reporter at Sudbury.com and was a reporter with CTV in Sudbury at the time he was arrested and charged. Man stabbed multiple times following Bruce Ave. fracas:

A Bruce Avenue man was stabbed multiple times early Tuesday morning in Greater Sudbury during an argument with another man.  “We received a call around 2:30 a.m. this morning, Sept. 24, in relation to an assault,” Greater Sudbury Police spokesperson Kaitlyn Dunn said in an email. “Upon arrival, officers found a 33-year-old man who had suffered multiple stab wounds. The man was transported to hospital by paramedics with serious but non-life threatening injuries.” Police on the scene were told an altercation took place between two men that ended when the victim was stabbed repeatedly. “The man fled on foot prior to police arriving on scene,” Dunn said. The suspect in the stabbing is described as being in his 30s, around 5-foot-7 with a medium build, short brown hair and brown eyes. He was wearing a hoodie, jeans and baseball cap at the time of the assault. Anyone with information related to this incident is asked to contact Greater Sudbury Police at 705-671-9171, or Crime Stoppers at 705-222-8477.

Off-duty paramedic and ER doc save injured motorcycle driver:

An off-duty paramedic and emergency room doctor were in the right place at the right time to provide lifesaving assistance to an injured motorocycle driver. At around 6:45 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 15 the Greater Sudbury Police Service responded to a serious motor vehicle collision involving a single motorcycle on Long Lake Road near Sunnyside Road. The driver of the motorcycle suffered life-threatening injuries and was transported to hospital by paramedic services, but not before two individuals at the scene provided lifesaving assistance. "We would like to acknowledge and thank the off-duty paramedic and emergency room doctor who came across the collision and provided lifesaving assistance to the driver until emergency responders arrived," said Greater Sudbury Police in a news release. Members of the Traffic Management Unit attended the scene and began an investigation into the incident. As a result of the investigation, it has been determined that excessive speed was a major factor in this single vehicle collision. The 32-year-old man driving the motorcycle has been charged with careless driving and is scheduled to appear in traffic court on Oct. 28 to answer to the charge. Anyone who witnessed the collision and has not spoken with an officer is asked to contact the Traffic Management Unit at 705-675-9171 extension 2415.

Gentili: Here’s how Trudeau could have avoided brownface embarrassment:

Well election season is in full swing and we’ve already got our first bombshell. That bombshell, of course, is the Justin Trudeau “brownface” controversy. Sudbury.com managing editor Mark Gentili looks at how Trudeau could have avoided the embarrassment of the photos being released to the public last week."He knew these photos and video were out there in the ether. He knew they existed. Did he just spend the past decade on pins and needles, hoping no one would find them?" writes Gentili. "A smarter play would have been to get out in front of the issue, especially once he decided he wanted to be the prime minister." Read the full column here.
