Good morning, Sudbury! Here are seven stories to start your day

As the nation-wide manhunt continues, the OPP is certain of one thing: No one knows where B.C. murder suspects Bryer Schmegelsky and Kam McLeod are.

Good morning, Greater Sudbury.

Here are some stories to start your day.

B.C. murders: Nervous northerners calling in dozens of tips, but so far none credible, police say:

As the nation-wide manhunt continues, the OPP is certain of one thing: No one knows where B.C. murder suspects Bryer Schmegelsky and Kam McLeod are. And the OPP media co-ordinator for northeastern Ontario is certain of something else: the two young men can't be in two places at once. "We had tips from Kapuskasing and one from Cochrane — they can't be in two places at once," said Acting Sergeant Shona Camirand. "(And) Cochrane got another call Wednesday night, but it turned out to be two tree planters. Anytime people are seeing two scruffy young men, people suspect it's them." Even Thursday, a tip came in from Spanish regarding two males in a Ford truck, another vague tip about two young men in a vehicle, with no description beyond their apparent gender. A message Camirand wants to push to people in Northern Ontario is if you see people you suspect might be Schmegelsky and McLeod, the first thing to do is call police with the tip. What she wants to discourage people from doing is immediately posting it to social media.

Police tight-lipped about joint investigation that ended in early morning arrest at New Sudbury gas station:

Greater Sudbury Police were part of a multi-jurisdictional operation that resulted in an arrest at the Petro Canada at the corner of Barrydowne Road and Lasalle Boulevard Thursday morning. Police are not releasing much information in relation to the investigation at this time. "In order to protect the integrity of the operation and in order to maintain officer safety we cannot provide further information at this time," said GSPS spokesperson Kaitlyn Dunn. "Information related to this operation will be provided to our community and the media, in collaboration with our policing partners in the near future."

Sorry, smokers, no more smoking areas at city arenas:

Sorry, smokers, if you're going to be attending an event at a municipal arena from this day forward, be prepared. As of Aug. 1, Greater Sudbury will no longer provide designated smoking areas at any of the 14 community arenas — including Sudbury Arena — in the city. And what's more, because of the city's no re-entry policy, you won't even be able to go onto the sidewalk to smoke or vape, and expect to get back into the event you're attending. In a notice to media Thursday, the city said the change "is in line with the updated Smoke-Free Ontario Act, designating public spaces as smoke and vape free." Designated smoking areas at concerts, special events and sporting events at Sudbury Arena (including Sudbury Wolves and Sudbury Five games) will no longer be offered. And once you leave the building, you're out, as per the no re-entry policy.

City's coolest new coffee shop: Old cameras, fresh Old Rock coffee at Café Obscura:

A new downtown cafe with a unique concept opened its doors July 29. Café Obscura, owned by David Wiewel, staff photographer at Northern Life from 1989 to 1999, not only sells the typical café fare of caffeinated beverages and baked goodies, but also film and film cameras. Wiewel, who, after his time at Northern Life, ran his own photography business and later a renovation business, said he got back into film photography about three years ago, and now shoots exclusively on film. He also produces tintypes and wet plate photography, types of early photography done in the 1800s. Get the full story here.

Waterfront adventure: Sudbury marks end of 3K-km journey for 145 cyclists:

For Torontonian Jon Gee, the portion of bike trail between Massey and Espanola — part of the 3,000-kilometre Great Lakes Waterfront Trail — is what stood out in his mind as one of the best parts of the days-long trek. Gee was among 145 cyclists to depart from Sault Ste. Marie on July 29 and arrive in today. Throughout the adventure, they made stops in Bruce Mines, Blind River and Espanola. In Sudbury, cyclists toured Stack Brewing, Crosscut Distillery and 46 North Brewing, before making their way to Science North to cross the finish line and collect their medals. This year’s cyclists were from four provinces, including Ontario, Alberta, Quebec and New Brunswick and seven States, including Alabama, Florida, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New Jersey, Arizona and Pennsylvania. They range in age from 23 to 81. More on this story here.

Quinton Byfield will suit up for Canada at Hlinka Gretzky Cup:

Sudbury Wolves forward Quinton Byfield has been selected as one of 22 of the country's best young players and will represent Canada at the Hlinka Gretzky Cup in Breclav, Czech Republic and Piestany, Slovakia, Aug. 5-10. Byfield is coming off a spectacular rookie season in the OHL where he racked up 29 goals and 32 assists in 64 games, along with three goals and five assists in eight playoff games. His standout rookie campaign did not go unnoticed as he scooped up the OHL's Rookie of the Year award as well as the CHL Rookie of the Year. The 6-5, 215 lb. 16-year-old is one of eight OHL players that will don the red and white for Team Canada at the summer U-18 tournament.

The kinkiest convention ever to come to Nickel City is Aug. 17:

Sudbury will finally have its first ever "kinky convention" when the Midnight at Dawn Expo takes over the Sudbury Events Centre on Aug. 17. Described by event co-ordinator Mark Nadeau as a "Graphic-Con for adults," the Midnight at Dawn Expo will be a 19+ all-day event that will feature a breadth of workshops, vendors and presentations that all cater to those who like a little kink in their lives. The Midnight at Dawn Expo is being hosted by Midnight Manor, Sudbury's alternative lifestyle community, which has been hosting munches, workshops, play parties and more in Greater Sudbury for almost seven years. Sudbury is certainly on board with adding a little something extra in the bedroom, as the city has consistently ranked in the top five on PinkCherry's list of the sexiest cities in Canada, a list based on the purchases of sex toys per person. Internationally renowned artists HeadMistress Shahrazad and Tifereth will be at the expo, educating and entertaining those in attendance. Vendors from across the province will be bringing their wares to Sudbury to help expo-goers find that new and exciting item to spice up their relationship. Find out more here.
