One person drowned after canoe capsizes in the North Channel
Around 8 p.m. on Aug. 4, Manitoulin Ontario Provincial Police were called to investigate a capsized canoe on Sagamok Point in the North Channel of Lake Huron. Police confirmed through Twitter early Monday morning, that one person has died as a result of the incident.
Vehicle becomes lodged in hydro guide cables causing a temporary outage Downtown
A single motor vehicle collision knocked out power to a number of residents Monday morning after it became lodged against a hydro pole. At around 9:50 a.m. Monday, a vehicle was travelling eastbound on McNeill Boulevard when it became entangled in a set of guide wires on the corner of McNeill Boulevard and Beatty Street. Greater Sudbury Police Staff Sgt. Ward said the cause of the accident is yet to be determined, but police believe it to be a one-vehicle, one-passenger event. The passenger has been transported to the hospital, although the extent of their injuries is not yet known. Read the full story here.
Four new fires discovered in the Northeast Sunday, one in Sudbury
There were four new forest fires discovered in the Northeast region Sunday, one of which was located within Greater Sudbury, according to the latest fire situation update by Aviation, Forest Fire and Emergency Services. The forest fire hazard ranges from moderate to high across most of the central and southern portion of the region, with a few isolated areas west of Onaping Falls and near Wenebegon Lake showing an extreme hazard. Both the northern and southeastern part of the region is showing a low to moderate hazard. Read the full story here.
One child a year dies after being stuck in hot car on average, Canadian study says
Accidents in which children die while stranded in hot cars may be more common than people realize, but the authors of a study probing the issue said there are numerous practical habits parents can adopt to ward off such tragedies. The study from the Hospital for Sick Children concluded an average of one child a year dies across Canada after being trapped in an overheated vehicle, usually because a parent or caregiver forgot they were inside. Little Current swing bridge could be classed as a heritage property
The future of the Little Current swing bridge as a heritage property is under evaluation in a separate assessment process from the study to determine the future of the road link between Manitoulin Island and the mainland, following standards and guidelines set forth by the Ontario Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Sport (MTCS). “The standards and guidelines for conservation of provincial heritage properties (issued under section 25.2 of the Ontario Heritage Act) apply to all property owned or controlled by the Ontario government that is identified as having cultural heritage value or interest,” wrote MTCS issues co-ordinator Sadiyah Hira in an email to The Expositor. Bell Park hosts Sudbury's second annual Afrofest
On Saturday, Afrofest hosted their second annual celebration of African culture, community and culinary tradition at the Grace Hartman Amphitheatre. The afternoon included performances by Sudbury, Toronto, and Ottawa afro artists, as well as a bouncy castle, face painting, vendors, and food from the Sudbury African Market and Fire Flame Jerk House. Sudbury's Afrofest was introduced by Tonye Oriaskhi last year in partnership with Bayo Gegeogu and Shade Onajobi, owner of the Sudbury African Market, to connect Sudbury's African community and share African culture with Northern Ontario.
