Five fall just short in shootout with the Lightning:

The Sudbury Five had their two-game winning streak halted Sunday in a thrilling game against the London Lightning where both teams lit up the scoreboard. The Lightning outlasted the Sudbury squad, hanging on for a 139-136 win in a game that saw eight different players eclipse the 20 point mark. It was a back and forth game from the opening tip off as the Five and Lightning traded baskets in the first with the Five taking a 36-34 lead into the second quarter. Both defenses buckled down in the second, as London outscored Sudbury 24-22 in the second and the teams went into the half knotted up at 58 points apiece. The second quarter would turn out to be the least eventful of the game as both teams game out gunning in the second half, combining for 87 points, with London getting the upper hand, scoring 47 in the quarter and taking a seven point lead into the fourth and final quarter. The Five battled back and were able to put up 38 points in the fourth but it wasn't enough to overcome the three score lead that the Lightning had amassed in the third quarter and the Five fell to a final score of 139-136. Five guard Jaylen Bland was outstanding on the night, leading all players with 44 points including 10 three-pointers while adding nine rebounds, nine assists and a steal. The team returns home to the Sudbury Arena next week with a Friday night game against the KW Titans on Jan. 17.
