Good morning, Greater Sudbury.

Here are some stories to start your day.

Case No. 111: Public Health Sudbury reports new COVID-19 case:

Public Health Sudbury & Districts reported a new COVID-19 case in its service area on Tuesday, the 111th confirmed case in the region since the pandemic began. This person, who is from Greater Sudbury, was tested Oct. 12, and is self-isolating. The exposure category is listed as a contact of a travel-related case. Through contact tracing, Public Health Sudbury will notify all close contacts directly. If you are not contacted by the health unit, you are not considered a close contact. There are currently three active cases in the area covered by Public Health Sudbury & Districts.

The Junction Sudbury? Mural on Ledo Hotel pops up over the weekend:

Hot off the heels of unveiling a plan to revitalize the Ledo Hotel on Elgin Street, a mural directing people to a website with information on Junction projects can now be seen on the iconic downtown building. The mural simply reads: Welcome to the Junction, with the website thesudburyjunction.com across the bottom of it. On the opposite side of the Ledo Hotel is more writing, but it reads: Bienvenue, and has the website again. When you visit the website, visitors are welcomed with a simple design: Large white letters on a black background. It lists a number of proposed projects including plans by the La Ledo Inc. group to redevelop a historic and iconic corner of the downtown. The website also shows off the Project Now designs, as well as conceptual designs of the Elgin Greenway project, the Sudbury Library and Art Gallery, as well as aerial views of the Ledo.  Through the website, you can also visit The Junction Sudbury’s Facebook Page, Twitter and Instagram pages. There is very little information on any of those platforms, though.

COVID-19 won't spook away trick-or-treating if safety rules followed: health officers:

Canada's chief public health officer says trick-or-treating should be possible this Halloween as long as little goblins take precautions to prevent the spread of COVID-19. Dr. Theresa Tam cautions, however, that parents should listen to local public health authorities for advice on their particular communities. Tam says outdoor trick-or-treating can be safe when people respect physical distancing, wear masks, use hand sanitizer and ensure treats are pre-packaged. She notes a cloth mask can even be incorporated into some costumes. Deputy chief public health officer Howard Njoo says Halloween celebrations will vary across the country. But he points to the way people creatively adapted to safely enjoy Thanksgiving as an example to follow. Full story here.

Missing: Police seeking info on woman who has not been seen since Sunday afternoon:

Greater Sudbury Police Service is requesting the assistance of the public to locate a missing woman. Michelle Savoie was last seen on Oct. 11 at 2 p.m. in the area of Kennedy Street in New Sudbury. She was last seen wearing blue jean, a navy jacket and pink shirt. Savoie is 27 years old and is described as 5-7, 190 lbs. with auburn hair and hazel eyes. Anyone with information on her whereabouts is being asked to contact GSPS at 705-675-9171.

Teaching kindergarten online? It’s a big challenge, but Sudbury teacher Kelly Beaton says she’s figuring it out:

Teaching kindergarten online is still a relatively new concept, and one that has come with both challenges and unexpected delights for Sudbury French Immersion kindergarten teacher Kelly Beaton. There are technological difficulties — although not as many as she expected — and working with 25 three-to-five-year-olds online means having to partner closely with the child’s parents or caregivers in providing instruction and documenting kids’ work. Those parents at times are juggling their child’s online kindergarten with working at home or caring for babies and toddlers, or maybe an older child who’s also studying online. There’s the need to talk to kids about internet safety such as making sure that everyone is fully dressed before they log onto online school. Little kids also can’t use tools like scissors for a school activity if their mom or dad isn’t in the room. But there have also been moments of delight, such as kids getting to show off their baby brother or sister or their favourite toys, or making new friends among their online peers. Vale will raze Stobie Mine headframes, outbuildings this fall:

Vale will close a chapter of Sudbury’s storied mining history this fall. The company has announced plans to remove the headframes and associated buildings at the site of Stobie Mine, which has been on care and maintenance since 2017. “The aging headframes are being demolished to reduce maintenance costs and pave the way for potential new development currently being studied at the Stobie Mine site,” said Patrick Boitumelo, head of mining and milling for Vale’s North Atlantic Operations, in an Oct. 13 news release. Slated to take place between mid-October and mid-December, the work will include dismantling all three Stobie headframes, as well as Shafts Seven and Eight, which will come down starting Oct. 13, and Shaft Nine, which will be “blasted down” the week of Nov. 9, the company said. Vale said some buildings have already been removed – the crusher plant, mill and hoist building among them – and more are scheduled for demolition. In more than 120 years of production, Stobie produced more ore than any other mine in the history of Sudbury, according to Vale. Get the full story here.
