Good morning, Greater Sudbury.

Here are some stories to start your day.

Ontario government website reveals hidden details of COVID-19 cases:

An Ontario government website has provided age and gender information on the most recent positive COVID-19 cases within the jurisdiction of the Public Health Sudbury and Districts. PHSD stopped revealing age and gender information earlier this year, suggesting that the information could somehow compromise the privacy of the individuals listed in their regular COVID-19 case counts. Of all the cases reported since March 1, 2020, the website is showing 46 cases not yet resolved by the Sudbury health unit.  The majority of the cases involved persons in the 20 to 29 age group and were tested in the past week or so.  Seven of those cases involved persons under the age of 20; two are male, five are female. The website revealed there are also four older cases, all males; three in their sixties and one in his eighties. Get the full story here.

There are now 83 active COVID-19 cases in the North, 48 in Greater Sudbury:

Public Health Ontario confirmed 1,242 new cases of COVID-19 on Monday. This was the fourth consecutive day the province has reported more than 1,000 new cases, and the third-highest daily case count ever reported. The province has also confirmed 12 COVID-related deaths Monday, including two people between the ages of 60 and 79 years old, and 10 people over the age of 80. Since Sunday's provincial update, there have been 38 people hospitalized with the coronavirus and four COVID patients have been admitted to intensive care units. Public Health Ontario reported 821 new recoveries on Monday as well. Get all the latest numbers here.

City launches online book of condolences for Alex Trebek’s family:

Greater Sudbury Mayor Brian Bigger and city council invite residents to sign a virtual book of condolence for Jeopardy! host and former Sudbury resident Alex Trebek, who passed away Sunday. The book will be available for signing online by visiting this website and will remain available for signing until the end of the day on Friday, Nov. 20. All messages received will be sent to Mr. Trebek’s family on behalf of the community.

Record-setting warm temps over weekend, more records likely for today:

It will be short lived, but Greater Sudbury is likely in the midst of a four-day stretch of record-setting weather, said an Environment Canada meteorologist. Peter Kimbell said warm weather has settled across Ontario since Nov. 4. This past weekend broke two records for heat in November, one dating back to 1975. The mercury rose to 17.2 C on Saturday, with the previous record of 16.6 C set in 2016. Sunday was even warmer, with temperatures reaching 18.3 C. The previous record of 16.1 C was set 45 years ago in 1975. “We came close to setting records on Nov. 5 and Nov. 6, but not quite, and we were only several degrees short there,” said Kimbell. Greater Sudbury stands a good chance of setting records today with a forecasted high of 17 C. The current record high for Nov. 10 is 14.4, set in 1975.

Home Hardware in Chelmsford shuts for a COVID cleaning:

A hardware store customer who tested positive for COVID-19 has prompted the North West Lumber Home Hardware store in Chelmsford to close its doors temporarily to do a thorough cleaning of the premises. The local hardware store posted a public statement on its Facebook page explaining that a store customer revealed they were in the store on Friday, had no symptoms, but tested positive for COVID-19 on Saturday.  "As required by Public Health Sudbury and Districts (PHSD), any team member in direct contact with the infected individual is following PHSD guidelines," said the Home Hardware statement. "As we work through this process, we have decided to voluntarily close our doors today (Monday, Nov. 9, 2020) so the store can be thoroughly disinfected," the statement continued. The store also said the health and safety of its employees, along with the local community was a paramount concern. More on this story here.

Sudbury’s unemployment rate down to 7.9%:

Greater Sudbury’s unemployment rate saw a slight dip last month, down to 7.9 per cent from 8.5 per cent in September. Greater Sudbury added 600 jobs in October, bringing the employment rate to 79.3 per cent with a labour force of 86,100 people. Canada’s unemployment rate saw little change in October, down only 0.1 per cent to 8.9 per cent over September, said Statistics Canada in its Labour Force Survey. The country gained 84,000 jobs, up 0.5 per cent in October, after growing by an average of 2.7 per cent since May. The number of unemployed Canadians (1.8 million) held steady in the month and was up 683,000 (60.2 per cent) from pre-COVID February levels. Get the full story here.

Let’s eat: How Zaher’s Small Batch is bringing a yummy family recipe to the masses:

Let’s face it, we eat differently. Differently than we did in the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s for sure. Hummus was never on my Grade 6 spelling list. We were so unprepared for the future. Words like casserole and meatloaf (not Michael Lee Aday’s 1977 “Bat Out of Hell” version) or Jell-O populated our television screens, and therefore our plates, too. Then along came Chicken à la King, Chicken Kiev, Beef Bourguignon, and Crème Brulee, and soon we had appetizers, mains, savouries and sweets. How adventurous we all seemed with meatballs using grape jelly, stuffed crescent rolls (A.K.A "Pigs in a Blanket") and fondue. Hello canapé, hors d'oeuvre, amuse-gueule, “Nouvelle“ and good-bye Lipton Onion Soup Dip and wobbly desserts and salads encased in gelatin. We woke up to global food, pan-Asian dishes, tapas and spices like iron-red sumac (in Arabic  ???? ). We went from salt and pepper to spice drawers, racks and cupboards overfilled with curries, caraway and cumin. Ah, what is Canadian cuisine? Can you recall the first time you tasted hummus? Well, Deke Zaher can’t either, but for him the love affair with this flavourful mélange based on chickpeas has been a lifetime; and now is a passion project. Get the full story here.
