Fatal collision closes Falconbridge Road:

Greater Sudbury Police were forced to closed off a section of Falconbridge Road at Pilotte Road after a fatal collision Monday afternoon. The collision occurred at around 3:45 p.m. on Monday and the road was closed from Pilotte Road to Margaret Street. Entrance to and exit from the strip mall along Falconbridge Road was closed off while officers investigated the scene. Witnesses at the scene said that a pedestrian was struck and dragged by a vehicle, though Greater Sudbury Police have not yet confirmed any witness accounts. The identity of the deceased has not been released at this time.

Sudbury man charged in fatal Highway 17 collision:

The Sudbury OPP Crime Unit is continuing to investigate a fatal multi-vehicle collision that occurred at approximately 5 p.m. on May 28, on Highway 17 in Walden Township, Ontario. As a result of the investigation, a 31-year-old Sudbury man was arrested and charged with Manslaughter anb two counts of Dangerous Operation of a Motor Vehicle Causing Bodily Harm. The accused appeared for a bail hearing at the Ontario Court of Justice in Sudbury, Ontario on June 11, and a publication ban is now in place. Meet the Sudburian whose number was retired by the Washington Capitals:

When Yvon Labre was playing hockey on an outdoor rink on San Francisco Street in Sudbury in the 1960s, he likely dreamed about competing for the Stanley Cup. When he finally made it to the NHL fulltime in 1974, however, he had to settle for a trash can. As a member of the 1974-75 Washington Capitals, one of the league’s newly minted expansion teams, the Sudbury native was part of the worst single season in NHL history. The Capitals finished their inaugural campaign with an abysmal record of 8-67-5. Forty-three years later, the Capitals have gone from hoisting a trash can to the Stanley Cup. This past Thursday, Washington defeated the Vegas Golden Knights to win their first championship in franchise history. Labre, who had been with the team since its inception, couldn’t be happier. What does Premier-elect Doug Ford lack? Competence, says former Tory cabinet minister Jim Gordon:

Sudbury.com editor Mark Gentili sat down with former mayor and government services minister Jim Gordon before the June 7 election to talk about the Tories, the direction Doug Ford has taken the party and how the former cabinet minister feels when he looks at his party. Gordon doesn't pull any punches. Questioning the competetence of Ford as a leader and politician, and the competetance of those who chose him, Gordon argued that what's best for Ontario, best for voters and best for business is a strong centrist government, not one that leans to far one way or the other. Veteran municipal politician Terry Kett seeks Ward 11 seat:

Veteran municipal politician Terry Kett has announced his intention to run for Greater Sudbury city council in Ward 11 in the upcoming October municipal election. Kett previously served as councillor in the Minnow Lake-area ward from 2010 to 2014, and from 2003-2006 served as a Greater Sudbury city councillor for the Walden area (then Ward 1). He was also mayor of the former Town of Walden from 1991-1997.  Ward 11 is currently represented by Lynne Reynolds, also a veteran local municipal politician. She announced last month she will not be seeking reelection. Now in his early 70s, Kett lost his seat in the 2014 election to Reynolds. Reynolds defeated Kett by about 400 votes. So far, Kett is unopposed in his run for the seat. He himself is not yet registered as a candidate for Ward 11 on the city's website.
