Good morning, Greater Sudbury.
Here are some stories to start your day.
Fight over the KED: A primer on what to expect as Kingsway appeal begins:
As the dust from the election settles, the next big event on the municipal calendar is the Nov. 6 case management conference, the first step in hearing the legal appeals aimed at stopping the Kingsway Entertainment District. The conference is being held by the Local Planning Appeals Tribunal (LPAT), which took over from the Ontario Municipal Board last year. Unlike the OMB, which took years to make a decision, the LPAT is supposed to wrap up its process within a year, in this case, June 2019. You can find out more about the LPAT conference here.
Fire causes severe damage to Minnow Lake apartment building:
One woman was taken to hospital with minor injuries after a fire at an apartment building in Minnow Lake Saturday evening. Greater Sudbury Fire Services responded to a call of a structure fire at around 4:45 p.m. on Nov. 3 at an eight-unit apartment building on Barry Street in Minnow Lake. A total of 21 firefighters responded to the blaze from four different fire stations. The fire was caused by a candle that caused a mattress to catch fire. The flames spread throughout the unit and in total, four of the units in the building were damaged by fire and smoke. Damage estimates are around $300,000. A woman was taken to hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation but her injuries were not deemed to be serious. "Candles are a common cause of home fires. Keep lit candles safely away from children and pets and blow out all candles before leaving the room," said GSFS in a news release. "Secure candles in a sturdy holder in a location where they can’t be knocked over. Fires caused by candles are easily preventable."
Sudbury Five training camp tips off at Cambrian College:
On Nov. 3, Cambrian College hosted the open practice of the Sudbury Five as part of the team's official training camp. Of the 17 athletes in attendance, roughly half were unsigned and used Saturday's practice as an opportunity to impress coaches and earn a professional contract. Among perspective athletes was Laurentian University alumni, Georges Serresse, who upon graduation had the opportunity to play professionally in France for four years. While an incredible opportunity, Serresse says he is “happy to be back home and [have] the chance to play in front of friends and family, which is something I haven't got to do in a while.” Check out the full story here.

The Canadian leg of STP's tour is making 14 stops in the true north strong and free and six right here in Ontario. Unlike many major tours, this one doesn't make the usual stops in large centres like Toronto, Ottawa, and Montreal, but instead is hitting spots like Sudbury, London, Peterborough, and Oshawa. Check out Sudbury.com with Seether bassist Dale Stewart here.
The City of Greater Sudbury wants your feedback on backyard hens:
The City of Greater Sudbury is asking residents their thoughts on permitting backyard hens in residential zones. Allowing backyard hens would mean updating two existing bylaws: the Zoning Bylaw, 2010-100Z and the Animal Care and Control Bylaw, 2017-22. At this point in time, residents are permitted to own chickens on any property that is larger than one hectare, and is within a zone where agricultural uses are permitted. Until Nov. 15, residents are able to submit their feedback on backyard hens, existing bylaws and additional municipal issues electronically through the survey provided. Residents are invited to 'Chicken Chats' taking place around town, find out if there's one in your area here.
