Good morning, Greater Sudbury.

Here are some stories to start your day.

Restaurant owner admits guilt in sex assault of a minor:

The owner of a restaurant in Greater Sudbury is pleading guilty to sex assault and exploitation charges involving a former employee who was 17 when she was victimized. The victim and her family were in court Thursday, expecting the man to plead guilty and to read victim impact statements. However, under a deal with the Crown, the man was given until August to “get his affairs in order” before formally pleading guilty. A joint submission from the Crown and the defence on sentencing will be part of the man's guilty plea, now scheduled for Aug. 21. An agreed statement of facts will be presented then.

Glencore faces up to $7.5M fine for 2018 incident that injured three:

Glencore Canada Corporation will be back in court July 12 as it and a supervisor face charges for a workplace accident on May 9, 2018, that left three workers doused in sulphuric acid. Glencore faces a $1.5M fine for each of the five Occupational Health and Safety Act charges it faces, while a supervisor faces a $100K fine, plus a year in jail. Glencore is charged with failing to ensure workers were provided with information, instruction and supervision for the task of, transferring sulfuric acid from rail car to tanker truck, at the company's Falconbridge complex. The supervisor faces charges for failing to ensure a worker uses or wears the equipment, protective devices or clothing that the worker's employer requires to be used or worn.

Meet Maizie Hanson, this Sudburian has knit 1,287 little hats (and counting!) for newborns:

From Health Sciences North to Moosonee's Weeneebayko General Hospital, if you've welcomed a bundle of joy into the world recently, your family may have been one of 1,287 to receive a hand-knit baby beanie by local Maizie Hanson. For the past four years, 93-year-old Hanson has been knitting baby beanies and donating her finished products to hospitals across the province. The "little hats" as Hanson describes them, are delivered to Health Sciences North by her son Terry, and out of town by anyone willing to transport the thoughtful gifts. More on this story here.

Book of condolence for Jean Vanier at Tom Davies Square:

Sudburians who want to honour the memory of Jean Vanier can sign a book of condolences on display at Tom Davies Square any time between now and the end of the day May 15. Vanier, 90, passed away May 7. He founded L'Arche, an organization dedicated to improving the lives of people with intellectual disabilities in 1964. It began with one house in France, L'Arche at Trosly-Breuil, and has since grown across the globe, including an office in Sudbury.

Headed to HSN? Expect longer than normal wait times:

If you need to head to the Emergency Dept. at Health Sciences North today, be prepared to wait, the hospital said in a notice to patients posted to its Facebook page today. On Thursday, the hospital told Sudbury.com it was at 112-per-cent capacity, with 98 ALC (alternate level care) patients in the system. This has led to what HSN says are serious issues of overcapacity in the emergency department. Patients can expect longer than normal wait times in Emerg, and should be prepared that you may receive care in what HSN is calling unconventional locations. Patients shouldn't hesitate to seek emergency care, the hospital says, help with non-urgent medical needs can be found at walk-in clinics or by calling Telehealth Ontario, 24 hours a day, seven days a week, at 1-866-797-0000.

Culture day: St. Charles College students host third annual powwow:

St. Charles College hosted its third annual student run powwow today. What started off as a small school event now draws students from three school boards: Conseil scolaire catholique du Nouvel-Ontario, Sudbury Catholic District School Board and Rainbow District School Board. Students were exposed to many different aspects of traditional Aboriginal culture through dancing, music, and food. Browse through the photo gallery here to get a look into the festivities.
