Let’s eat! Tasty grub and simulation golf at The Daventry

New eatery on Regent Street offers pubfare with a twist, and the chance to practice your drive

Come for a snack and stay for some indoor simulation golf. That’s the premise at The Daventry Kitchen and Bar on Regent Street in the South End of the city.

The Daventry opened March 1.

Eric Parent owns the social spot having been the owner of the Hour Glass downtown before leaving for Health Sciences North to work as a porter.

“I left HSN on Remembrance Day because I missed life in the hospitality industry big time,” said Parent, who spent 22 years at places like SpeakEasy, Casey’s, Respect is Burning, The Grand and Peddler’s Pub.

Parent has two silent partners who have helped him set-up and establish the more than 15,000 sprawling square feet of space with its 20 employees.

Time is now being spent on perfecting the menu items and opening the dining room up to special events.

Parent said much of the menu is old-fashioned pubfare with a few new twists.

“Some of the appetizers featured are wings, risotto balls and the Smorgas’ Board, which features seven different appetizers including calamari, hummus and pickled garden goodies.”

The board also features pepperoncini poppers, which are pickled peppers with smokey sweet cheese, prosciutto crisps and a balsamic glaze.

There are tons of burgers and salad options on the menu with entrees like porketta tips, fish and chips and seared ahi tuna with a sesame and nori crust and a side of edamame, and honey-ginger-flavoured soba noodles.

Parent’s favourite entree is the Scotch eggs, something he grew accustomed to while living in Edinburgh for two years. Daventry’s version includes two cooked eggs with chorizo, arugula and two different aiolis.

The connection to Shooters is a symbiotic relationship. They are housed in the same space with different ownership.

They are currently collaborating on the first annual Daventry Indoor Golf tournament.

Parent said the space is very large meaning multiple events can take place at one time and it can be partitioned in different ways for functions.

“We recently hosted a salsa event and there were more than 100 people salsa dancing from The Charleston to Despacito-type music,” he says.

The staff are also looking forward to specials on the patio all summer long, as well as memorial events and other celebrations.

Current hours of operation for The Daventry Kitchen and Bar are 11 a.m. - 9 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday. Hours are extended Thursday to Saturday 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. The pub is closed Sunday and Monday.

The Daventry is located at 1500 Regent Street. It can be found on Facebook and at TheDaventry.ca.
