I would like to commend Heidi Ulrichsen for
her article regarding Adoption Disclosure and for quoting Gail
Gilchrist from the Sudbury branch of Parent Finders.
Bill 183 will allow adults who were adopted
the same human rights as others: the right to their personal
information and history, the right to obtain a copy of their
original birth certificate, and hopefully, learn the names of
the two people who created them.
The article helped to dispel a lot of the
myths regarding adoption, especially the one that records were
sealed to protect the identity of the
mother. Adoption records were originally
sealed to protect them from the prying eyes of the public. They
eventually became sealed to all involved
because of the lobbying done by the adopting
couples.
I am a firm believer in that saying, "The
truth shall set you free" and hope that passage of Bill 183
will help heal those involved in the loss of a child to
adoption.
