What happened in New Orleans and area is
impossible to imagine. But as the residents there were given
several days of warning to evacuate, it's surprising relief
efforts were not there until about a week later.
It's hard to imagine the suffering of those
who survived to be trapped in a building for days without
water, food or sanitation.
Canada is willing to help from hundreds of
miles away with millions of dollars and volunteers, including
numerous doctors and nurses.
I think we should prepare for emergencies in
our own country, where we also face fires and floods, and where
help is also badly needed. Whenever these tragedies do take
place in our country, we never seem to depend or get any
assistance from the United States.
