Letter writer C. Poirier said she was almost killed outside of the New Sudbury Walmart after a driver didn't see her as she crossed the intersection. File photo.

I was almost killed walking out of Walmart in New Sudbury today.

I came out the doors, looked both ways, and everyone was stopped. One lady in an SUV was waiting to turn east. I crossed, and about three-quarters of the way across, the SUV started to move and turned my way. She wasn't stopping.

I could not move fast enough to get past her. My instinct was to slam both hands on top of the hood of the vehicle. The noise got her attention, and she put on the brakes. If it wasn't for my instinct, or the fact I was alert, the outcome could have been very different.

The driver asked if I was OK, and said the sun was in her eyes. Then she drove off. At 4 p.m., the sun is west. She was turning east. I have to wonder if anyone else has come close to being killed coming out the doors at Walmart?

I don't think anyone runs people down intentionally, but the fact is, it happens. What can be done to make this crossing area safe?
