As far as we’re aware, the effort now under way to compete to host the 2021 Canada Summer Games is the largest bid in the city’s history, and many community groups have collaborated to showcase everything Greater Sudbury has to offer.

Sudbury residents should be very proud of what this city has to showcase on the national stage. These Games would not only provide an important and immediate boost to our city during the two weeks of the event itself, but would also give us the opportunity to demonstrate to Canada that Northern Ontario has a longstanding history of diversity and sporting excellence, along with a vibrant cultural scene.

In previous editions, the Games events have attracted between 11,000 and 16,000 spectators – visitors who stay in the host city, take in the sights and sounds, and support local businesses. It is understood that while this is a large undertaking, it is an incredible initiative that will create a strong national legacy for our city.

This legacy will demonstrate itself not just during the games, but also in hosting test events prior to the games and in the capacity to host many events for years afterwards in our new and rejuvenated facilities.

We, in Greater Sudbury, take much pride in our community’s natural beauty, as well as our commitment to multiculturalism. The Games can further accentuate our image by drawing attention to our excellent post-secondary institutions, raising awareness of our Indigenous communities, and celebrating our Francophone ties. In addition, the Games help by creating jobs and providing the impetus to improve our sports facilities. Simply stated, the gains would far outweigh the costs.

The 2021 Canada Summer Games will enhance our city’s image, boost our economy, and leave a strong national legacy for our city. We’d be investing in our sports venues with lasting improvements that our future generations can use to achieve their goals. It’s time that we show Canada our dedication to sports, by inviting people from across the country to our doorstep.
