It's unfortunate that jobs are being lost at Sudbury Hospital Services, but it can't be avoided, according to letter-writer Kenny Johnson. (File)

It is unfortunate that 38 jobs will be lost when Sudbury Hospital Services shuts down.

The workers still have a "faint hope" hearing to make their case to keep the laundry open. Good luck.

Let's be clear on the $500,000 that Health Science North will save annually. Granted, Mohawk Laundry in Hamilton pays about the same as SHS, but the savings here are not on employee salaries.

Even factoring in the laundry transportation costs to Hamilton, Health Sciences North is still saving a half a million dollars a year.

These dollars, which the hospital desperately needs, are the overall cost to run the facility. The list includes heat, hydro, water, city taxes, chemical purchases, maintenance of laundry equipment, insurance, building upkeep, office supplies ... the list goes on.

Unfortunately, in today's business world, some jobs are sacrificed for the betterment to all.
