I greatly admire John Ralston Saul (who
recently encouraged Laurentian University graduates to pursue
their futures in Sudbury.)
I would love to have my four children and two
son-in-laws here, but I will not encourage them to come home to
unemployment and dead-end jobs.
The days of 75 per cent of people working at
the mines are gone. The young need to be encouraged to look
elsewhere. At one time young persons knew they could follow
their fathers, grandfathers, uncles, etc. into the mining
industries. It may not have been the job they wanted, but it
was a job.
The young grad could always have gone into
health care or teaching. These jobs because of working
conditions are no longer inviting.
A lot of young people worked for Bell, these
jobs have moved south with many other services.
We need some new blood with vision and
commitment to bring Sudbury into a new era at city hall.
Until this happens I am afraid what local
artist Will Morin said is true. "Pave the roads out of the city
so our young people will have a smooth ride away."
