No one listening - F. Bourque

I wish Terry Kett was running in my ward and here's why.
I wish Terry Kett was running in my ward and here's why.

When Ward 5 residents were fighting the truck stop near Algonquin Road in 2002, newspaper headlines read:

Safety concerns at heart of OMB appeal; Petro-Canada south-end refueling facility; Truck stop will create havoc in South End.

Who are the councillors who voted to approve this project in Ward 5? Ward 5 Councillors Doug Craig and Austin Davey.

I wish the South Bay residents success in their endeavor if they appeal the development at OMB. For us, I wonder would the outcome have been different had our two councillors supported us.

As their spokesperson, Tom Gerry stated, "He (Austin Davey) just dismissed our concerns."

Craig did the same thing at the public meeting I attended on the refueling station on Feb. 7, 2002. Residents at this meeting raised concerns about noise, traffic safety and environmental issues, and these were ignored.

Now the South Bay residents are raising concerns about possible water contamination, traffic congestion and accessibility that need to be solved before the subdivision could go ahead.

I find it ironic that right next to this article was the former Walden mayor Terry Kett, a candidate for city council in Ward 1, saying, "This ward has become a forgotten ward."

Kett is quoted as saying, "he city needs to encourage affected neighbourhoods to actively participate in the solution before the final decisions of council." Too bad we don't have a Terry Kett running in Ward 5.
