This letter is in response to your reader who
had to incur a lengthy wait at the grocery store
checkout.
Has she ever been to a bank? If she thought
that was a long wait, just wait until store hours are extended.
She'll be waiting even longer.
Stores are already faced with the
ever-increasing cost of utilities. They are not going to add
extra staff. There is only so much money to spend on a family
budget. Sunday shopping only spread out the sales. It did not
increase sales.
Low price specials in stores are brought
about by low wages, along with little or no benefits. Existing
employees schedules will only be spread out to cover increased
store hours, which will lead to an already diminishing family
life.
Sudbury has a chance to be a leader in this
store hours debate; not a follower.
When we were growing up, our parents told us
to go to school so we wouldn't become a garbage collector. Now
we tell our kids to stay in school so they don't end up working
in a grocery store.
