Religion not reason for fighting - Jack Boyd

Last Sunday evening, the Baha' i Community of Sudbury hosted a celebration of World Religion Day at the Older Adult Centre. Presentations were made by members of the Hindu, Buddhist, Jewish, Muslim and Baha'i faiths, each sharing some of their beliefs and values.

About 50 people from these faith groups enjoyed an evening of fellowship, during which new friendships were made and old ones renewed.

Religion has been used around the world as an excuse for violence, but all of the presenters were in agreement this was an abuse of spiritual teachings from Scriptures which universally promoted peace and brotherhood.

People around the world long for peace, but many have come to believe that aggression is a fundamental part of the nature of man.

That such a view is a distortion of the human spirit is born out by the fact here in Sudbury people from such diverse religious groups, which in other parts of the world are contending, could gather and not only speak about brotherhood but demonstrate it.

These religions have created civilizations and produced spiritual guidance for 7,000 years of man's history, and at the very core of each is the Golden Rule.
