Send in the frowns - Rosemarie Mirfield

On the evening of Friday, Feb. 27, I had the pleasure of attending a performance of One Act Plays at Sudbury Secondary School. I enjoyed it so much I returned again Saturday night. It was thrilling to see these young people in such excellent form.
On the evening of Friday, Feb. 27, I had the pleasure of attending a performance of One Act Plays at Sudbury Secondary School.

I enjoyed it so much I returned again Saturday night.

It was thrilling to see these young people in such excellent form.

Each play had its own specific challenges, and you could only imagine the effort involved in rehearsal time, in direction, in set decoration and in stage management.

The skill displayed was on par with anything STC might offer, yet these students and staff also had a full day's worth of courses and teaching to contend with as well.

Imagine how you would feel, all of these things considered, taking your stage bow in front of 40 or 50 people? Where was the house?

Sudbury Secondary is known for its excellent stage performances, be it song, dance or drama, and I feel these young people were betrayed. Poor advertising aside, where were the parents, schoolmates, and supporting staff of this talented gang?

If my child spent many hours after school perfecting the craft, I would make the effort to attend the final performance, even if I hated live theatre.
It's heartbreaking as a performer to have to invent excuses for why the house was nearly empty, when you're given it your all, and excelled.
