Mayor Jim Gordon announced the third floor of
the former City Centre tower will be transformed into the
Sudbury Technology Centre. The Northern Ontario Heritage Fund
has committed up to $500,000.
I hope this will create jobs in the city, but
my question is, why can't such a project be developed in an
outlying area? New initiatives seem to be (always) implemented
in old Sudbury.
We were recently told the Trillium Centre in
Azilda has a lot of empty space. Why was it not considered (for
this project) since it is owned by taxpayers and the money from
the Heritage Fund is a public fund?
Why not encourage such initiatives in public
buildings we own instead of using taxpayers dollars to prop up
private enterprise?
After all, there is ample free parking for
employees at the Trillium Centre and with the four-laning of
Highway 135, people will be able to get there within five to 10
minutes from downtown Sudbury.
