Greater Sudbury will host the Northern Ontario Music Festival All-Star Jazz Band May 2 at 7:30 p.m.

The ensemble - made up of talented high school students from across northern Ontario - will perform in the McKellar Auditorium at Lockerby Composite School.

The concert is free, although donations will be accepted at the door.

This year, Juno award-winning jazz artist Mike Malone will lead the talented student performers. Malone has been part of the Canadian jazz music scene since the early 1970s and is a key member of the Jazz Studies faculty at Mohawk College in Hamilton, Ont. He also serves as a clinician for Yamaha Music Canada, and conducts Improvisation Workshops at York University in Toronto.

Malone is featured as both a writer and trumpet soloist on many recordings, showcasing such artists as Ranee Lee, Nimmons 'n' Nine Plus Six, the Dave McMurdo Jazz Orchestra, the Alex Dean Quintet, The Brass Connection, and the Kieran Overs Nonet.

He was recently honoured with special recognition as the 2009 recipient of the Phil Nimmons Jazz Composition Commission, sponsored by the Canadian Association of Jazz Educators and the Society of Composers, Authors and Music Publishers of Canada (SOCAN).

"We invite everyone in the community to mark their calendars now and come out and support some of the most talented jazz musicians in northern Ontario," said Ralph McIntosh, arts education co-ordinator for Rainbow District School Board, in a release. "This concert is not to be missed."
