Celebrate the Chinese Moon Festival Sept 10 in Bell Park

The Chinese Heritage Association of Northern Ontario is hosting the traditional mid-autumn festival to showcase traditional Chinese music, dancing and food

On Sept. 10, Sudburians will get to experience what the Chinese community here celebrates every year, the Chinese Moon Festival.

Held this year at Bell Park, the free festival will feature food and performances, as well as a chance to learn more about this traditional mid-autumn celebration, also known as the Mooncake Festival.

And though there has been a Chinese Heritage Association of Northern Ontario (CHANO) for 20 years, this is the first major event they are holding, said Yu Peng (Patrick) Lyu, president of CHANO.

“We are excited for the opportunity to share our culture with everyone,” said Lyu.

Running from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., the festival will showcase traditional Chinese dancing and music, including traditional Chinese instruments, dances from various dynasties and ethnic groups, Taiji performances and a Chinese yo-yo show.

Family-friendly activities will include a chance to write in Chinese calligraphy and have your name translated to Chinese, as well as create a traditional Chinese paper lantern, and more.

There will also be traditional foods normally served at a Chinese Moon Festival, including fried rice, Chinese dumplings and chicken balls, among others, all provided by local restaurants and caterers.

CHANO is also still adding vendors to the festival, so feel free to apply.

You can find more information on CHANO’s website, found here, or on their Facebook event page, found here.
