Greater Sudbury will be celebrating World Food Day on Monday, Oct. 16 at Market Square from 12:30 - 4:30 pm. It's the first time the community has hosted the event.
"World Food Day is celebrated around the globe every year at
this time to increase public awareness about the importance of
maintaining local food systems," said Doreen Ojala, past
co-chair of the Sudbury-Manitoulin Food Security Network and
co-ordinator of the Foodshed Project.
There will be free sessions on the history of agriculture in
Sudbury, how to start your own 100-mile diet, which emphasizes
buying locally, how to prepare for emergencies, and how to map
out the future of food systems, says Ojala.
Brigitte King, a nutritionist with the Sudbury and District
Health Unit, will demonstrate the new concept of food
mapping.
"Food mapping came from British Columbia communities such as
Victoria where communities decided to map out food stores,
farmers, processors and distributors-the result can be
expressed using advanced GIS mapping technology or just be
published as maps on paper for education purposes. What we will
be doing on World Food Day at market square will be a first for
this part of the country," said King.
The concept of World Food Day is easy to grasp, says Ojala.
"Here's an example of how World Food Day works. I was shopping
at Costco and I was so happy to see they were stocking Copper
Cliff milk in the store. For anyone who has been a long time
resident of this city, what can be more local than Copper Cliff
milk, where the product comes from dairy herds nearby? When
Costco stocks this product they support our local farmers and
give consumers the freshest milk possible because it is so
close," she said.
At the World Food Day gathering there will be displays and
booths from local community groups.
