The Northern Seniors Connections project has been nominated for an award from Galleries Ontario.
The project is a partnership between the Art Gallery of Sudbury and Atikameksheng Anishnawbek. The community outreach program provides people the opportunity to create art.
Lindsay Fraser, an adult day programmer at Atikameksheng Anishnawbek First Nation, said the project was well-received in the community.
"Our community has worked with the Sudbury Art Gallery for the last three years and has been a great asset to our community in creating beautiful pieces of art to be enjoyed in our homes and buildings,” Fraser said. “I wish to extend the invitation once again to the Sudbury Art Gallery in helping us ‘debendaagziwaad giizhig,’ bringing our loved ones home."
A release about the Galleries Ontario Key Partnership Award 2023 said the nomination recognizes the “exemplary collaboration” between the First Nation and the Art Gallery of Sudbury on the Northern Seniors Connection project over the past three years.
Besides Fraser from Atikameksheng Anishnawbek, the other program partners are artists Dineen Worth and Nancy Gareh from the Art Gallery of Sudbury.
“The Northern Seniors Connection project has significantly enhanced the gallery's outreach into the community and facilitated the development of new programs for diverse audiences,” said AGS Director and Curator Demetra Christakos in the news release. “We are extremely appreciative of the commitment and contributions of Atikameksheng Anishnawbek First Nation to this collaborative initiative.”
The awards will be presented in Toronto on Dec. 2 at the Sears Atrium at Toronto Metropolitan University.
