Join the Sudbury Symphony String Quartet and Duo46 for a captivating chamber music concert commemorating Remembrance Day Nov. 11.

The concert pays tribute to those who have sacrificed for our freedom and reflects on the power of music in times of adversity.

The evening will feature masterpieces by legendary composers, including Dmitri Shostakovich's String Quartet No. 8, and music by living composers — Michel Daugherty’s "The Bay of Pigs” and "On Freedom" by esteemed Canadian composer John Oliver.

Performances by the acclaimed violin and guitar ensemble Duo46, as well as the renowned Sudbury Symphony String Quartet, promise an unforgettable musical experience.

Shostakovich's String Quartet No. 8, composed in 1960, holds deep historical significance.

Dedicated "to the victims of fascism and the war," this work is considered a musical testament to the suffering and devastation caused by the Second World War, serving as a reminder of the indomitable spirit of humanity.

Daugherty’s "The Bay of Pigs" is a modern composition that offers a unique perspective on the events surrounding the 1961 failed military invasion of Cuba. By incorporating elements of Latin music, jazz, and avant-garde techniques, Daugherty skilfully transforms this historical event into a gripping musical narrative, capturing the essence of strife and resilience. The composer stated the work is “an elegy for Cuba, past and present.”

Bringing a local touch to the concert, Oliver's composition "On Freedom" evokes contemplation on the concepts of liberty and human rights. Drawing inspiration from the nation's diverse landscape, Oliver explores Canada's journey towards a society built on equality, freedom, and justice.

Headlining the concert, Duo46 will enthral the audience with their virtuosity and innovative interpretation. Combining the mastery of SSO concertmaster, violinist Beth Ilana Schneider-

Gould and guitarist Matt Gould, Duo46 has established themselves as one of the most adventurous and dynamic ensembles in the chamber music realm.

Their commitment to expanding the boundaries of their art form has garnered critical acclaim and admiration worldwide.

Joining them on stage, the Sudbury Symphony String Quartet showcases the exceptional talents of four distinguished musicians.

Their collective passion for chamber music unites violinists Beth Schneider-Gould (Sudbury) and Angela Garwood-Touw (Timmins), violist Geoff McCausland (Sudbury), and cellist Yu Pei (Timmins) in a harmonious collaboration that has gained recognition both at home and regionally.

The event runs at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 11 at Place des Arts. Purchase tickets online here, at 705-885-1076 or at the door.
