The music of distinguished American composer Elliott Carter will be featured when the 5 Penny New Music Concerts launches its 2008-09 concert series on November 7 and 8 at St. Peter's United Church, 203 York St.

The World of Elliott Carter: A Celebration of His 100th Birthday will also present works by Canadian composers, including the premiere of a new work by Sudbury composer Robert Lemay.

The performers at the two-evening event include Sudbury musicians Yoko Hirota (piano), Ian Gibson (timpani) and Christian Robinson (violin) as well as the Estria Reed Trio from Sherbrooke, Quebec.

Elliott Carter, who turns 100 on December 11, is the dean of America's composers. A lifetime resident of New York City, Carter's music is noted for its dynamism and innovation.

It can at various times evoke the dense, hectic environment of the big cities, the vastness of American landscapes, and the intricate, mercurial nature of human relations.

Despite his advanced age, Carter continues to be creative. Recent years have seen the premieres of major chamber and orchestral pieces and an opera. His later music is marked by an economy and simplicity of style, and a new directness of form.

Carter is championed by leading conductors such as Pierre Boulez and Daniel Barenboim, and his many awards include official recognition from the governments of France, Germany, Italy, and the U.S.

The November 7 concert consists of works by Carter, Stewart Grant, Vincent
Bernier, and Robert Lemay.

Altogether there are seven pieces by Carter on the program including Inner Song for oboe; Statement: Remembering Aaron for violin; and
Pastoral for saxophone and piano.

Also notable will be the premiere of Gelb, Rot, Blau...hommage à Wassily Kandinsky for oboe, clarinet and piano by Robert Lemay. This work was commissioned by the Estria Reed Trio with financial support from the Ontario Art Council.

The second concert on November 8 features compositions by Carter, David Keane, Violet Archer, Bruce Mather and Harry Freedman. The Carter pieces include Canaries for timpani, 90+ for piano, Gra for clarinet, March for timpani, Riconoscenza per Goffredo Petrassi and Fantasy: Remembering Roger for violin and Canon for Three Instruments.

This event is presented in cooperation with Cambrian College and Laurentian University. It is also made possible with the financial support of the Canada Council for the Arts, SOCAN Foundation, Ontario Arts Council, and the City of Greater Sudbury.

The event will be held on Friday and Saturday, November 7-8, at 8 pm at St. Peter's United Church, 203 York Street, Sudbury. Admission for each concert is $15 and $10 for students. Tickets will be available at the door or at Black Cat, 96 Durham Street, Sudbury.
