Jazz Sudbury is beginning its annual search for talented up-and-coming Ontario jazz musicians ready to play the main stage of the Jazz Sudbury Festival this September a few months earlier this year. Jazz Sudbury’s Emerging Artist Showcase is now open for entries.
“Many of the entries we see come from music students and the old timing of the contest was close to exam time,” said Victoria Coate, Marketing and Partnerships Officer at Jazz Sudbury.
“Extending the showcase gives artists more time to put together a really strong submission!”
Also new this year is the use of the organization’s Facebook page to host the contest.
All performers who play around the jazz genre (soul, funk, blues, swing, etc.) whether they are a band, a duo, or a solo act are invited to showcase their talent and submit a three to five minute video performance to the Jazz Sudbury Facebook page for the chance to earn a spot in the festival lineup and a $1,000 grand prize.
Jazz Sudbury hopes to once again find exciting emerging acts from the region and throughout the province.
A panel of industry experts will narrow down the entries to the three finalists who will be invited to perform at a stand-alone show and headliner announcement event in June. Following a final decision from the judge’s panel, the Emerging Artists Showcase winner will be declared and will learn which headliners they will share the Grace Hartman Amphitheatre stage with in September.
Last year’s winners were Laura Swankey and Andrew Furlong, a duo from Toronto who wowed the judges with their original arrangements and traditional style.
The deadline to enter is April 31 at midnight. Warm up your chops and get the camera rolling and you could be sharing the stage with some of the best jazz artists in Canada.
