Besides getting oriented to campus life this September, first year students enrolled in health science, social service and education programs will join their upper year colleagues for a day-long event that introduces them to the practice of working together for the good of the client.
The fourth annual I.M.P.A.C.T. (Interdisciplinary Model Promoting Accessible Care Together) Health Day, to be held on Sept. 2, features an amazing non-race, bus rally, adventure relay for health, as well as a barbecue.
Organizers hope if the students hang out together and learn about the different ways they help people achieve optimum health, they will more likely work together when they graduate.
"Current research points to an interdisciplinary approach to health care," said project co-ordinator Meghan Juuti.
One of the highlights of previous years' events was the giving away of prizes and gift certificates donated by local businesses, such as Buzzy Brown's Brasserie, Sport Chek and Enterprise Rent-A-Car.
Last year, six students won bursaries worth $250 each. This year, Juuti and her team hope to give away at least eight bursaries worth $500 each. Students use the money to buy books or pay rent.
