Julie Houle and Danielle Fraser opened their 1,200 square foot studio in the Val Est Shopping Centre  in October, and christened it Mimi & Lulu.

Julie Houle and Danielle Fraser have created a one-of-a-kind studio for creative types. The products and services offered include: sewing supplies (everything from designer fabrics to notions), beading supplies (high quality all glass beads and gemstones), unique pendants and findings (clasp, wire, ear hooks- everything you need to put it together), heavy weight mats for felting, roving wool and needles, ready to go kits (beading and felting), gift certificates, inspirational books/ journals as well as a unique selection of ready made hand-crafted jewelry and gift items.

The two women, who are cousins, have a life-long passion for art and creativity. Having lived away from their hometown of Sudbury for a number of years, they realized that with the influx of big box stores, there were few opportunities for first-hand workshops in traditional arts and crafts.

"This is the kind of store we wanted to open in Sudbury as there wasn't anything like it. We wanted to create a cozy, friendly and fun environment where all ages could feel comfortable, express themselves, be inspired and motivated. We also wanted a place that would enrich the community we live in," say the women who are both fluently bilingual and professional teachers.

When you step into the studio, you will immediately feel the energy from this team of energetic and enthusiastic young entrepreneurs. The colours are vibrant, the retail products hand-crafted with attention to detail and the ideas are endless.

The studio in its layout and décor is a charming mix of old and new.

"We mix antiques with modern, even in our style of creating things - it's a mix of vintage and new. We are 'freestyle sewers,' this means we don't use conventional patterns - we make our own. Our handbags, cosmetic cases, totes and such are either made from high quality fabric or recycled textiles. We believe you have to be passionate and dedicated (to your craft) and we want to be the best we can."

Julie and Danielle talk about how they named their company.

Mimi & Lulu was inspired by children's books. Mimi is a dreamer and creative. Lulu is often seen in comic books and she is strong and courageous. So, Mimi & Lulu is a good combination of a creative spirit in a strong and confident woman, they say.
