Indian Gala supports STC

Dr. Grama and Bela Ravi host Indian dinner for local theatre centre

Nearly 450 Sudburians were treated to the sights, sounds and scents of an Indian feast on Oct. 27 during the Gala Indian Dinner at the Caruso Club.

Hosted by Dr. Grama Ravi and Bela Ravi, the couple had Bukhara Grill from Mississauga cater the event that offered a myriad of traditional Indian dishes.

The gala was held in support of the Sudbury Theatre Centre, an organization that Bela Ravi has close ties to as a former board member.

"My husband I and wanted to give back to the community and every year we're going to host an Indian dinner to support a different organization," said Ravi.

"I was approached by Caleb (Marshall) about putting on this event and I said that I would love to."

Marshall is the Artistic Executive Director with the STC and lauded praise on Bela for her knack for throwing such large scale events.

"She's a pro at putting on these kinds of events and we're honoured that she's chosen to support us this year," said Marshall.

The Indian dinners are nothing new to Ravi, who hosted the events for seven years for the Parkside Older Adults Centre.

"It's something that people seem to want to come to so we've stuck to it," said Ravi.

Proceeds from ticket sales as well as a silent auction will go towards the Sudbury Theatre Centre, and assisting them to grow in their 45th anniversary season.

"We've really exploded our programming this year, going beyond just producing theatre to becoming a performing arts centre, we're offering music and dance and comedy and variety," said Marshall.

"To expand to that degree obviously takes support but it's also about building up to help launch us into the next 45 years."
