Volunteers from the Sudbury Charities Foundation, Greater Sudbury Hydro, Science North, Cambrian College and other organizations were busy on Nov. 8 setting up more than 300 festive light displays for the Sudbury Charities Foundation annual Festival of Lights, which runs from Nov. 27 until Ukrainian Christmas on Jan. 7.

Sudbury Video - Volunteers prepare for the Festival of Lights "We're here today putting together all of the silhouettes that make up the displays. We are using LED lights for the great energy savings. We're going to save a lot more money on our hydro costs and reduce our carbon footprint," said John Querney, Sudbury Charities Foundation president.

"It is a great feeling to be helping the environment, but at the same time, it is a great accomplishment to raise additional money for the charity through these cost-savings."

Organizers were pleased to announce that nearly 100 per cent of the light displays have been re-roped with energy-efficient LED light strings. Last year, 50 per cent of the displays included LED light strings and the final power bill for the festival amounted to $500. That was $1,500 less than the power costs for 2006/07.

The Festival of Lights is one of three major fundraising events that the Sudbury Charities Foundation hosts. The foundation has been in existence for more than 40 years and is comprised of a volunteer board of directors that has the best interests of children at heart.

The annual Sudbury Charities Foundation Festival of Lights is supported by Science North, Greater Sudbury Hydro, the City of Greater Sudbury, the Sudbury Manitoulin Children's Foundation, Ten Rainbows Foundation and Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Sudbury.
