The film Shake Hands With the Devil about Lt.-Gen. Romeo Dallaire's horrific experiences as the head of United Nations peacekeeping forces in Rwanda in 1993 isn't pretty. Nor is it entertaining, in the true sense of the word.

The film, however, is cinema at its best. It delivers a powerful message and tells a cruel story about how the world stood by and watched almost 1 million murdered in a bloody civil war.

The Canadian film was the opening gala presentation at the 19th annual Sudbury film festival, Cinefest.

This is only the third time Canadian audiences have seen the film. It was shown last week at the Toronto International Film Festival, and at the Halifax festival. The movies was shot in Halifax and Rwanda. [For more on Cinefest, see Northern Life's Wednesday edition.]

A full schedule of films starts today (Monday) and continues until Sunday evening.
