The Artists on Elgin gallery staff are celebrating the store's fifth anniversary the only way they know how.

On April 4 at 1 p.m., a new exhibition featuring weavings from Terryl Ryan, leatherwork by Irene Plavins, wood turning by Dennis Gauthier and textile by Libby Dornbush will open in honour of the gallery's half-decade of existence.

"Every week someone comes in here with something different," said gallery manager Muriel MacLeod.

Since its creation in April 2004, Northern Artist Gallery and Artists on Elgin have held over 40 exhibitions showcasing works from local artists at 168 Elgin Street.

MacLeod admits that the gallery's growth was a pleasant surprise.

"We started with a group of 20. We thought we would try this for a month, and we've been going for five years now."

In the past five years, Artists on Elgin has showcased exhibitions ranging from blown glass and photography to paintings and handmade crafts. To some staff, it's been difficult to work and not admire the works in the gallery.

"I spend all day in here and I could point out so many pieces I love," says Inga Kaletka, who has worked at the gallery since October of 2008.

Fortunately for gallery viewers, some artwork on display at the fifth anniversary show will be available for purchase.

The fifth anniversary show will run until April 30. Gallery hours are Monday to Saturday from 10 to 5 p.m. Phone 674-0415 for more information.
