Greek Festival turns 25 years old

Community's youth helps keep it fresh and modern

Marking a milestone anniversary like 25 years for any festival is an achievement in an of itself - and it's a multi-generational effort that keeps it going year after year.

Kea Koutsoukis, festival spokesperson and a Hellenic dancer, said her generation is keen to keep the festival going. Everyone has their own ideas on how to keep the festival fresh and modern, and to keep attracting thousands of people to the Hellenic Centre over three days.

“Greeks are very proud people, and we love our culture,” Koutsoukis said. “We want to bring Greece to the people of Sudbury for the weekend. It's all about showing others what our culture is about: the dancing, the music, the food and the language.”

Of course, it's the Greek food that attracts most of the visitors.

“People love it, and it's a lot of fun,” she said.

At the same time, the Greek community benefits, as the festival raises funds for the Greek church, she said.
