Since its debut in 2003, Sudbury's Guitars Alive has continued to be a successful event, raising money in support of local guitar students. This year, by popular demand, Sudbury's own Guitars Alive Trio will headline the sixth annual event, which will open with top guitar ensembles from the community.

This year's concert will kick off with three new guitar groups, featuring students from Chelmsford Public School, Larchwood Public School and Levack Public School. The program will continue with secondary school ensembles, including Sudbury Secondary School, Lasalle Secondary School and St. Benedict's.

The Cambrian College Guitar Ensembles will be showcased, as well as Bruce Boyer - the featured soloist from the Laurentian University music program. Following a brief intermission, the Guitars Alive Trio will take the stage for an extended one-hour set.

Combining the distinct sounds of classical, acoustic and electric guitars, the Guitars Alive Trio of Philip Candelaria, Gary DiSalle and Paul Dunn, is an innovative musical collaboration featuring an eclectic mix of musical styles, including Latin, swing, jazz, blues, ragtime and folk. Formed in 2003, the group has amazed audiences throughout Northern Ontario.

Guitars Alive will take place on Saturday, Apr. 5 at 7:30 pm at Sudbury Secondary School's Sheridan Auditorium. General admission is $15 for adults and $10 for students and seniors. Tickets are available at Black Cat, Guitar Clinic, Jett Landry Music, Dupont's Guitar Shop, the Cambrian College bookstore, the Sudbury Secondary School box office and at the door.

All proceeds from Guitars Alive will go towards scholarships, bursaries and educational materials for local guitar students and to the Sudbury Kiwanis Music Festival.
