Hospital warns weekend warriors of dangers in backyard

Warm spring weather means long-neglected projects, such as spring cleaning, painting and house and camp repairs, may begin.

The Sudbury Regional Hospital (HRSRH), and its Emergency (ED) and Trauma Programs, caution there are dangers lurking in the backyard. Ladders, power tools, sharp or heavy objects, and overexertion can all lead to injuries of different types and severity.

"It is not uncommon at this time of year for the Emergency Department to see injuries related to inexperience, carelessness or over-enthusiasm in tackling spring projects," says ED Medical Director Dr. Chris Bourdon. "Aside from the obvious cuts, sprains, breaks, and bruises, we see a large number of injuries related to overexertion. Some of those, such as back injuries, can develop into chronic issues and have a serious impact on quality of life, resulting in a great deal of pain and time away from work and play."

The hospital offered tips to reduce the chance of injury: learn to use tools properly, lift with the knees, stretch before heavy lifting or exertion, pay attention to your surroundings, keep a clean work environment, and stay sober.

Be sure to use appropriate safety equipment and clothing when dealing with dangerous chemicals and hazardous tools. Lawn mowers or whipper snippers, for example, can be dangerous devices if not used with care. Wear appropriate attire such as closed-toe shoes and close-fitting clothing, as they are less likely to get caught in controls.
