Manitoulin Island artist Ivan Wheale draws inspiration from the landscapes of northern Ontario, with one of his favourite areas being the area between the North Channel to just south of French River.

Wheale, who is originally from England and a former resident of Greater Sudbury, noted the area was an area favoured by A. Y. Jackson, one of the Group of Seven landscape artists.

Wheale's work is being displayed at the Art Gallery of Sudbury, located at 251 John St. The show is called Ivan Wheale - An Artist's Journey. The exhibit runs to Thursday, Feb. 18 with an opening reception and artist talk Saturday, Jan. 16, 1-4 p.m.

The exhibit is drawings and paintings collected from private and public collections throughout Ontario, said a release from the Art Gallery of Sudbury.

“This unique exhibit is an intimate look at some of the most definite works of Ivan Wheale," Courtney Folz, manager of development and operations at the Art Gallery, said in the release.

"It is a comprehensive exhibition, with catalogue, covering his entire artistic career and the first time many of the works have been on public display and shown together.”

Over the years, Wheale has displayed his work at 86 solo exhibitions, including three major touring exhibits circulating throughout Ontario. His works hang in 42 public and corporate collections, including the Queen's Collection at Windsor Castle in England, the Queen's Park, and the Parliament Buildings in Ottawa, Folz said.

Wheale is a founding member of the Grismby Public Art Gallery, the La Cloche Art Show and the Willisville Mountain Project. He is represented by the Odon Wagner Gallery in Toronto, the Perivale Gallery on Manitoulin Island and by Artists on Elgin in Sudbury.

The Art Gallery of Sudbury is open Tuesday to Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from noon to 5 p.m.
