Celebrate one of Greater Sudbury’s greatest creeks at the annual Junction Creek Festival and Trout Release event on May 13.

Organizers say rain or shine, the festival will take place that Saturday from 12-3 p.m. at Twin Forks Park, at 1475 Gary Ave. in New Sudbury.

“The festival is free to attend with hot dogs, ice-pops from Papaya Pops, and drinks available for purchase. There will be a variety of activities for families of all ages, including trout release, live reptiles from Science North, identifying aquatic bugs from the stream, games, and more,” organizers said. “There will also be numerous community booths to check out.”

For the trout release, the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry is bringing along 3,000 brook trout to be released into the creek.

“Junction Creek has come a long way from the ‘Junk Creek’ that we grew up with,” organizers said in a news release. “Once a barren, murky and acidic stream filled with more trash than wildlife, Junction Creek is now becoming a diverse, thriving ecosystem central to the Greater Sudbury community.”

Since 1999, the Junction Creek Stewardship Committee has worked with community partners and more than 11,700 volunteers to plant more than 42,900 native trees and shrubs, remove more than 87,400 kg of garbage from shorelines and in-stream, and engage more than 23,000 students to make the Junction Creek waterway healthier and more vibrant.
