The Laurentian University Board of Governors approved a new strategic plan at its annual meeting on June 13. Building on success, a Strategic Plan for Laurentian University 2008-11, reinforces the university's commitment to teaching and learning, community and research.

"This plan will enable Laurentian to consolidate its recent growth while keeping the momentum and moving forward with new initiatives," said Dr. Judith Woodsworth, president of Laurentian.

This was Woodsworth's last board of governors meeting. She will be at the university until the end of July, helping to set a timetable for the plan, before moving to Montreal to take over as president of Concordia University.

Woodsworth also unveiled a study by Deloitte and Touche that looked at the university's economic and social impact on Greater Sudbury and northeast Ontario.

Some of the highlights are:
- Laurentian University's overall annual spending is about $308,527,600.
- About 35 per cent of the 37,000 Laurentian alumni continue to reside in the Sudbury area and almost 60 per cent live in northern Ontario.
- Faculty and staff donate an average of 225 hours a year to local charities and not-for-profit, sport and community groups.
- Faculty and staff have a long tradition of being intimately involved in the business and cultural communities of Greater Sudbury, specifically in the areas of economic development, francophone and Aboriginal initiatives, mining, health and the environment.

The strategic plan and study will be posted, by the end of July, on the university website, laurentian.ca.
