Three graphic design students at Cambrian College have been
getting their hands dirty with design professionals to produce
Soap and Water, a non-profit magazine that aims to showcase
talent in Northern Ontario and to use its funding to establish
future scholarships for Cambrian students. Their first issue
debuted at the colleges' student centre, On The Rocks, Feb.7 .
"We hope to promote the great design work going on in the north
and show that Sudbury has a huge amount of talent just waiting
to be discovered," said one of the college's graphic design
students, Leslie Varady. "It's not just Toronto that can do
top-quality design work."
As students, she says she believes its their job to push the
boundaries and test the water and that their aim right now is
to produce 500 copies of the inaugural magazine. Plus, they're
already working on their second edition, which is scheduled to
be out by June.
"With our second issue, we hope to double both the size and the
amount of copies we print," said one of the program's
second-year students, Jennifer Taback.
For now, they continue to look for submissions from the public
and are encouraging people to take an interest in the magazine.
