A number of local musicians are playing for free this Saturday at the Townehouse Tavern, downtown on Elgin St. to help fundraise for a new house building project by Habitat For Humanity.

"All proceeds, the $10 cover for adults and $5 for students, plus the bands' time is donated for this worthy cause," said organizer Billy John of the Rubes.

This is the first time Billy John, a 10 year veteran of the local music scene, has organized a fundraiser for Habitat For Humanity.

"We are raising money for the Richer house to be started this spring in Hanmer for a very deserving family. Come on out and have fun starting at 8 pm," he said.

Confirmed to perform are the father and son duo of Paul and Brian Dunn playing blues and country folk, The Jean Wells Band, a female folk trio, The Saltcoats, a three piece jazz folk group and The Rubes, an outlaw bluegrass group.

The Rubes have been performing for two years. In Sept. 2007 they put out their first CD, produced by Easter Island Studios, called The Tailgate Tracks, available at Records on Wheels downtown.

Fundraisers will continue for the house building project.
"We are helping organize a Sunday, Feb. 17 wine and cheese at the SRO club on Durham St. It is a community event-we are even sourcing local foodstuffs, that is very popular these days," said John.

Tickets for the Townehouse event this weekend are available at Records on Wheels, Black Cat Too, the REstore's new location on Frood Rd. and at the venue.
