Nesbitt Public School students head to math Olympics

Nesbitt Public School students captured the gold and silver medals at the Greater Sudbury Math Olympics on May 3. For the sixth year in a row, they will represent northern Ontario at the All Ontario Math Olympics in Peterborough, May 30 and 31.

Nesbitt Public School students captured the gold and silver medals at the Greater Sudbury Math Olympics on May 3.

For the sixth year in a row, they will represent northern Ontario at the All Ontario Math Olympics in Peterborough, May 30 and 31.

Gold team members include Grade 8 students Zac Smith and Courtney Shallah, and Grade 7 students Alex Palkovits and Meghan Wismer. The silver team includes Grade 8 students Chris MacDonald and Chelsea Bourget, and Grade 7 students Rachel Belanger and Alex Chellew.

Teams of Grade 7 and 8 students from the Rainbow District School Board and the Sudbury Catholic District School Board participated in the the Greater Sudbury Math Olympics.

"We commend Carl A. Nesbitt Public School for continuing to lead the way with more impressive results in mathematics," said Rainbow District School Board Chair Judy Hunda in a news release. "They have the winning formula and we wish them well as they proceed to the provincial competition."

Jim Sutherland, retired principal of the Rainbow District School Board, has been coaching the Nesbitt Nitros for more than a decade. The Rainbow District School Board recognized Sutherland for his efforts in 2006 with an Award for Outstanding Contribution to the Co-Curriculum Program.

"Under Mr. Sutherland's guidance, Nesbitt students have honed their math skills at a competitive level," said Director of Education Jean Hanson in the release. "His love for math has been infectious with students. He truly inspires them to achieve their full potential, evident by their six gold medals in six consecutive years."
