‘Neutrals are in’ for fall and winter

The weather may be cooling off, but that doesn’t mean fall fashion can’t be hot. Helen Florentis and Tanya Charles, the co-owners of Sixty Six, Sudbury’s newest designer fashion boutique, said fall trends have arrived at their shop.

The weather may be cooling off, but that doesn’t mean fall fashion can’t be hot.

Helen Florentis and Tanya Charles, the co-owners of Sixty Six, Sudbury’s newest designer fashion boutique, said fall trends have arrived at their shop.

It may not be a new style for fall, but Florentis said boots and booties are more popular than ever.

“Boots are huge,” she said. “Boots, boots, boots. Starting in the fall, everyone’s wearing boots.”

Over-the-knee, to-the-knee and ankle-high styles are all in, with or without heels.

Closer to winter time, Sixty Six will also bring in a line of winter boots made by Pajar, a company based out of Montreal.

“They make a great winter boot, because they have knowledge of our weather and our particular needs,” Florentis said.

She said boots and booties are a great style, because they are so versatile.

“You can wear them with everything, depends on what you feel comfortable with,” she said.

Some popular things to pair boots with this fall include “jeggings,” or jean-leggings, and sleek riding-pant bottoms.
Tops with less form and “loose bodies that don’t hug you” are also in.

“Fashion is moving, in terms of tops and dresses, less towards tight fitting things and more (toward) unstructured (styles),” Florentis said.

Bags that are worn across the body and decorated with things like flowers, zippers and bows are popular, too.

As far as colours go, Florentis said less is more.

“Neutrals are in this year for fall and winter, and they’ll continue on to spring and summer of next year,” she said.

Some other lines carried by Sixty Six include Rock Rival denim, J Brand jeans, Mackage, Nicole Miller, BCBD, and t-shirts by Wildfox, Evil and Nation. They also carry a number of shoe lines for men and women.

Charles said she and Florentis selected these lines mainly because they are designers the two women know and wear regularly. No other retailers in Sudbury carry these lines, but since they are so popular in Hollywood, Charles thought they’d do well here.

The clothes Sixty Six carries aren’t exclusive to a certain crowd either.

“I’ve sold the same Nicole Miller dress to a 60-year-old retired women and to a 20-something-year-old,” Charles said. “Nicole Miller is for all ages.”

While an average pair of jeans may cost a shade more at Sixty Six, they are priced comparably, if not better, than at other shops carrying the same products.

“The consumers that knew the brands we were carrying, knew that they were well-priced and they ate them up,” Charles said.

Little extras, like fresh homemade cupcakes waiting for shoppers and sleek reusable shopping bags, make it even easier for Sudburians to support local businesses.

“Shoppers today are very knowledgeable,” Charles said. “They shop online, they travel to Toronto — you can’t get away with taking advantage of the shopper because they’ll go somewhere else.”

Sixty Six is located at 66 Cedar St.
